Purpose of the Role

Reports to the Senior Mechanical Engineer and is responsible for mechanical infrastructure design for water and waste water treatment plants. Drives general mechanical engineering design deliverables.

Job Duties

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Mechanical/Piping design of infrastructure related primarily to water and waste water treatment plants (process plants) – 3D process plant modelling capability;
  • Accepting and interpreting concept designs from an engineer with the objective of adding details and produce finished drawings.
  • Understanding the use of external model referencing/BIM integration;
  • Interpretation of process and instrumentation diagrams;
  • Compilation of technical detail design drawings for mechanical equipment;
  • Compilation of detailed piping isometric drawings;
  • Working collaboratively with other design departments;
  • Manage time and production schedules;
  • Keep up to date with techniques required by job related software products;
  • Advise on developments within the CAD Software industry related to job functions;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Be able to operate plotting devices and printers;
  • Ensure filing systems are maintained and up to date;
  • Operate within ISO standards;
  • Operate within Document Control System requirements;
  • Ensure correct filing and signing of documents as well as necessary approvals are obtained from clients and service providers;
  • To be aware of the chain of custody of documents/drawings;
  • Incumbent is expected to carry out site inspections of construction works for short durations on sites as follows;
    • Ensuring compliance with design/specifications and standards
    • Preparing design reports
  • Do any ad-hoc office or site duties as assigned by the Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Qualifications & Experience / Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Registration with ECSA.
  • 10 + years’ experience after graduation, with 6 + years’ experience specifically in the design and construction of water and wastewater treatment plants (process plant design experience will also be considered).
  • A valid drivers license.

  • Ability to troubleshoot design issues and propose solutions.
  • Problem solver and target driven individual.
  • Ability to deliver required results while working in a high pressure environment.
  • AutoCAD Plant 3D modelling is mandatory.
  • Piping design skills for generation of piping isometrics is mandatory.
  • Specification / Catalog builder experience will be advantageous.
  • Revit MEP design skills will be advantageous.
  • Willingness  to travel on an hoc basis to countries in South Africa and Africa.

Salary: To be negotiated.

Reports to: To Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Travel: Occasional travel to site, intercontinental and internationally.
